- Insight into Obesity:
The number of people being obese is increasing at a very rapid rate. This is primarily due to the lifestyle. Lack of time to eat nutritious food, convenience of gorging on fast food or sometimes it may just be a genetic problem. Obesity is the amount of excess body fat. This excess amount of fat is life threating where it can cause problems of the heart, the lungs, increase your blood pressure and the like. The number of problems is directly related to how obese you are. It is very important to identify obesity and work vigorously against it. Obesity treatment includes change in your diet, increased amount of physical activity and if need arises there are many medications and surgeries recommended by doctors.
- If nothing works surgery will:
Sometimes it so happens that despite change in lifestyle, there is no reduction in body fat. These are times when people resort to weight loss surgery. This surgery has recently caught the fancy of many since it is very effective. Despite the happy outcome of the surgery there are many risks associated with it. Weight loss surgery revolves around two aspects, either limiting the intake of food or decreasing the absorption rate of food and calories or sometimes both. Surgery for the obese is considered only in cases of extreme obesity or when the health related problems are increasing due to excess body fat. Results have shown close to fifty or more percent of weight loss with surgery. However mere surgery doesn’t help in curbing the potential weight gain, it is highly dependent on your eating and exercising habits.
- Common surgeries:
The popular and effective surgical treatments include Gastric bypass surgery, Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), Gastric sleeve and Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. Gastric bypass surgery has received a lot of recognition due to its success rate derived by happy customers. In this surgery the surgeon makes a small pouch on the top of your stomach. The small intestine is then connected to this new pouch thereby cutting the connection to your stomach. In LAGB the stomach is itself divided into two small pouches inserting an inflatable band. LAGB is one of the most recommended amongst other obesity treatment due to the steady weight loss. Gastric sleeve is where part of the stomach is removed thereby having a small storage capacity for food. Biliopancreatic diversion surgery is the case in which most of the stomach is removed however there is higher risk of vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition.
- After surgery:
Just getting under the knife is not going to help. After the surgery, there is a high need to be cautious of what you eat, include regular exercising as part of your routine and have a change in behavior and mindset. Physical activity is the best method to ensure you do not gain any weight post the strenuous surgery. Do not give into temptation ever. Find a healthy way of living and be confident in the new you.
